How It All Started

In the winter of 2012, Marcus Hendricks was renovating his first home in east Toronto. The previous owners had left behind a stack of reclaimed barn boards in the garage. Rather than disposing of them, Marcus spent his evenings transforming those weathered planks into shelves for his new workshop.

Neighbors noticed. Friends requested similar pieces. What began as a weekend hobby gradually consumed more evenings, then entire weekends. By 2014, Marcus had quit his job as an architectural draftsman to pursue woodworking full-time. The garage became a proper workshop. The workshop eventually became a small industrial unit. The solo operation grew into a team of five dedicated craftspeople.

Today, crater-hawk operates from a converted warehouse in the Junction Triangle neighborhood. The same principles that guided those first garage projects remain central to everything we do: respect for the material, attention to joinery, and designs that serve real needs rather than following fleeting trends.

Our Philosophy

We believe furniture should outlast the people who commission it. In an era of planned obsolescence and disposable goods, we deliberately swim against the current. Every piece we create is meant to become more beautiful with age, developing character rather than falling apart.

This philosophy extends to our material sourcing. We maintain relationships with small-scale lumber mills across Ontario and Quebec. When heritage buildings are demolished, we are often among the first calls contractors make. That barn beam from the 1890s, that factory flooring from the industrial age—these materials carry stories that new-growth lumber simply cannot match.

Sustainability is not a marketing term for us. It is the logical outcome of building things properly. When a shelf lasts sixty years instead of six, you have reduced consumption by a factor of ten. When reclaimed wood finds new purpose, it stays out of landfills. When local craftspeople earn living wages, communities thrive.

Our Workshop

Our 3,200 square foot workshop houses a blend of traditional hand tools and precision machinery. You will find Japanese pull saws hanging beside European chisels, a vintage bandsaw running next to a modern CNC router. We believe in using the right tool for each task, whether that tool was designed last year or last century.

The space includes dedicated areas for milling, joinery, assembly, and finishing. A climate-controlled lumber storage room allows us to properly condition wood before working it. Our showroom displays sample pieces and material options for clients visiting for consultations.

Workshop tours are available by appointment. We find that seeing our process firsthand helps clients understand why handcrafted furniture differs so dramatically from mass-produced alternatives.
